Have you ever searched for tutorials on 3G from your mobile phone? Most likely, your answer would be no but if I had asked the same question for search on PC, chances are that many of the telecom professionals could have searched for it. Here lies the difference between search on PC and search on mobile. The search algorithms that worked for PC are unlikely to work for the mobile. On the mobile, most of the search queries are around navigation, direction and local search. Search has been an integral part of internet. In fact, search is the very first functionality that any new user of internet uses. However, this is not true for mobile internet. The mobile search is yet not anywhere near the adoption levels of online PC based search.

How is Mobile Search different? The fundamental difference between the mobile search and PC search is the access device. The screen size of the mobile phone is a constraint and hence the internet search results need to be modified. Even the input keyboard is different and the search string could be shorter which means the search result has to be intuitive.

The second difference is in the usage pattern of mobile. Unlike PC, the mobile phone is a ubiquitous device and people normally search for “at the moment” kind of thing. This means they search for nearest restaurant, retail points, service centers or mobile content. Their need is immediate and the patience or tolerance is low. They are looking for relevant results that are actionable like they need a taxi that can reach them fast and they should be able to book the taxi using their mobile phone. This means that the result needs to be location aware and should also give the phone number of the taxi company.

Mobile and compact devices become more and more popular in our society. Each of us faces with them every day. Certainly each of us has mobile phone, hand-held computers or other hi-tech devices. All of these devices have different mobile platforms. There are such known platforms as Windows MobileM, iPhone, BlackBerry, Symbian OS, Android, Maemo, OpenMoko etc. All of them have different history and advantages and failings.

Introduction: Such platforms as Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, iPhone are «closed» enough and limited by either their own devices (BlackBerry, iPhone) or development complexity. Among other problems of above mentioned platforms there is limited API. Even Java platform for mobile devices has some failings such as great number of limitations; very different APIs; device dependent code. Symbian and Windows Mobile platforms are better from this point as far as they support wider range of devices and their APIs give more options. Common problem here is also that there are a lot of platforms. Talking about OpenSource and Cross-Platform solutions we should say that they are still developing at the moment and are not widespread yet.

In this article we’ll pay our attention to the Windows Mobile platform. Microsoft Company released its first platform for inbuilt devices at the end of the 90th. In 2002 Windows CE.NET platform appeared. And at that time Pocket PC based on Windows CE 3.0 platform and higher were released. Further development of wireless communication technologies managed to combine telephone and personal computer. Thus Pocket PC 2002 Phone Edition appeared which supported the standards of GSM, GPRS, Bluetooth and wireless HS network access. In the same time another device concept was developing that was much similar to the above mentioned but was closer to the telephone then to personal computer.

The Government has announced that it will auction off previously unavailable areas of the radio spectrum to pave the way for a new generation of mobile broadband services after a recent “competitive assessment of future 3G and 4G markets, including the potential for new entrants”. The Government hope that the sale will take place in 2011, which means that potentially, services could be available by 2012.

“The past 20 years has seen a revolution in mobile technologies – but we need the networks to continue to improve and increase services” said Communications Minister Ed Vaizey. Vaizey further commented “under our plans, our mobile industry will have access to the 21st Century infrastructure it needs to give UK consumers the latest technologies and even better coverage for broadband on their mobile phones.”

Communications regulator Ofcom will coordinate an auction of both the 2.1GHz and 800MHz spectrum “as soon as possible” the Government said. The existing 2G spectrum at 900MHz and 1800MHz will also be freed up to increase the use of 3G technologies. Users who currently use the 800MHz spectrum have been forewarned by the Government of its intentions and will be compensated so that they are able to invest in new equipment.

During 2000, we saw the the Government actioning off the 3G spectrum, raising around £22.5 billion. Analysts believe that many providers have not regained their original investment. With a market that is so vulnerable at the moment, let’s hope that investors play it safe this time around. To compare mobile broadband packages available at the moment be sure to pay us a visit.
